Drummond Island Resort – Recreation

0

If you have a genuine appreciation for the outdoors, you will enjoy many of the self-guided and structured activities contained within. Over 60% of Drummond Island’s 87,000 acres is state owned, and Drummond boasts of 150+ miles of shoreline.  There are far too many activities and sites to experience in a week’s time. And Drummond Island is not just to be experienced in the summer, but in all four seasons.

Drummond Island provides a very unique setting for outdoor adventure and activities.  Our residents create a number of activities throughout the year.  Our island businesses support most of the needs of residents and visitors alike.  Drummond Island is positioned at the eastern tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula – a region that is quickly gaining in popularity.  Our neighboring communities also offers an incredible array of services, attractions and activities.  Popular areas such as Sault Ste. Marie and the Soo Locks, The Les Cheneaux Islands-area which includes Hessel and Cedarville, and the Mackinac-area each offer wonderful day trips.
Fitness Room
We have a small fitness room at the waterfront that features free weights, a universal machine, and stairmaster. Call the Front Desk for hours of operation.

Outdoor Pool and Whirlpool
Open during the “warm season.” Located adjacent to The Lodge.

Scandinavian Sauna
A great finish to the day. Located adjacent to the Lobby at The Lodge.

Children’s Playground

Structure is designed for kids 5 to 12 years old. There is plenty of sand for the kids to enjoy as well! Located between the Lodge and pro shop, next to the tennis court. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Beach at the Waterfront
A small beach area is available to our guests. The beach is located at the foot of the resort’s pier. Due to decreased water levels over the years, shallow waters make this a great play area for young children. Inquire at the front desk for additional swimming areas on the island with deeper waters.

Walking/Jogging Trails
The resort features a series of nature trails for walking or jogging. Maps are available at the Front Desk. A 3/4-mile interpretive trail also is available behind The Lodge parking lot. Bikers may ride on any of our interior roads, and we can direct to island trails. We ask that you not ride on our nature trails as the trails are planted with clover, etc., for wildlife habitat improvement.

Outdoor Chapel
One of the very unique structures that was built by Dominos Pizza Corporation at our waterfront area. Tucked in a serene cedar-wooded hillside, the Chapel is a special place for conversation, meditation, peaceful reading, and an occasional ceremony. Please as at the Front Desk for directions.

Great Room
The second floor of our lobby remains open 24 hours on most days for peaceful reading, conversation or card games. Light music and complimentary coffee make for a relaxing atmosphere.

Volleyball
We have a sand court, located next to the tennis court, behind the lodge. A ball is available,
contact the front desk for reservations.
Tennis Court
More strenuous activity can be had here. Tennis rackets and balls available. Please contact the front desk for reservations.

Bowling
For a much more relaxed pace, hit the lanes for some fun. Eight computerized scoring lanes available, bumpers available upon request. Located inside Pins Bar & Grill, next to the hotel.
Kayaking/Introduction to Kayaking
Explore the bay! There is no better way to explore the shoreline, or Potagannissing Bay than with a kayak. Drummond Island Resort has kayaks available free to our guests. Guided tours and instruction are available for individuals (minimum of 2 people) for a fee and by appointment. Contact the Front Desk for more information.

Note for 2012 – We’ve Moved!
Thanks to a community effort involving the City of Traverse City, Discovery Center Great Lakes, Elmwood Township and Traverse City Light and Power, Traverse Tall Ship has a new home! We are excited and proud to be located at the Discovery Center Great Lakes and we’re looking forward to a fantastic season to celebrate our 25th year of sailing on Grand Traverse Bay. Our new office is just north of our old location on M-22, right across the road from what long-time residents will know as the “Coal Dock”. This dock has served as home for the Maritime Heritage Alliance’s fleet for some time, so we’ll be in good company at our new berth.
